Yes its true downloading some addons can contain viruses..thats why you must go to a trusted world of warcraft addons and downloads website.. The website I trust and download addons on is:

If you download a random addon from google search there is a chance it will result in your account being hacked and stolen due to you unknowingly installing a keyloger with that addon. The most common site to use for wow addons is but it takes time to download, and upgrade addons daily (really sucks when Omen has an update every day)
The best and only place you should get addons from is a program called ‘wowmatrix’ from wwww.wowmatrix.com (its perfectly safe and trusted – all files are virus tested just like curse.com)
wowmatrix is a program that (once downloaded and installed) lets you chose from a list of hundreds of basically every addon available in WOW. Once you have chosen what you want just click download and every one is downloaded and installed. Best of all to upgrade every addon you have just open wowmatrix and click update all and it does every addon automatically, then just click run wow – saves you days of time

watch what addons you install; stuff like questhelper is good; dunno about others but am sure people tried.

as the three guys said above curse.com is the best. it is mostly safe but it is posible to get your account hacked from using it. but most people in WoW use it. it has almost any addon you would need and it has all the ones that you need to raid/BG.
